An Overview of the Zimbabwean Banking Sector At independence (1980) Zimbabwe had a sophisticated banking and financial market, with commercial banks mostly foreign owned, Makoni (2010). A central bank had been inherited from the Central Bank of Rhodesia and Nyasaland at the winding up of the Federation. For years the government did not interfere with the banking industry and there was neither nationalisation of foreign banks nor restrictive legislative interference on which sectors to fund or the interest rates to charge, despite the socialistic national ideology.
